PREVIEW: BREAKERS vs. SPIRIT
Saturday, 7 p.m. ET | Dilboy Stadium | Somerville, Mass.
(May 23, 2013) – The Boston Breakers are looking to rebound from their first loss of the season when they welcome the Washington Spirit on Friday.
It is the third meeting between the Breakers and Spirit in the first seven weeks of the season, with two teams drawing both previous contests 1-1 – including the opening game of the season for both teams at Dilboy Stadium when Sydney Leroux scored in second-half stoppage time.
The Breakers come into the game after suffering their first shutout of the season in their 2-0 setback on the road to FC Kansas City in Week 6.
Boston will look to forwards Leroux (four goals) and Lianne Sanderson (three assists) to get the team’s offense back on track after the Breakers managed fewer than 10 shots in each of their last two games.
Both Boston and Washington have shown the ability to take their offenses to another gear. The Breakers were the first team in the NWSL to score four goals in a game on the back of a hat trick from Leroux against the Chicago Red Stars in Week 4.
Washington became the second team to score four goals in a game this season when Tiffany McCarty, Victoria Huster, Ali Krieger and Diana Matheson each found the back of the net in a 4-2 midweek victory over Seattle Reign FC in Week 6.
However, the Spirit were unable to build on the win and followed up the offensive explosion with a 2-0 loss to Portland Thorns FC three days later.
Washington will be looking for a tighter performance at the back after allowing 11 goals in their first seven games, the second most in the league.
The Spirit will be playing their third consecutive game on the road during a stretch of five of six games away from home.
