PREVIEW: REIGN vs. THORNS
Saturday, 10 p.m. ET | Starfire Stadium | Tukwila, Wash.
(May 24, 2013) – Seattle Reign FC and Portland Thorns FC renew their budding rivalry on Saturday with the season’s second helping of the Cascadia derby.
The Thorns claimed all three points in the first meeting between the two teams this season with Alex Morgan and Marian Dougherty each scoring in the 2-1 victory for Portland in Week 2.
Midfielder Jessica Fishlock scored the lone goal for the Reign in the game and made an early contribution to the rivalry when she drew the ire of the Portland fans with her passionate celebration.
Fishlock was awarded the NWSL Player of the Week for her performance that game, but the result started a streak of six consecutive losses for Seattle.
The Reign had their best offensive performance of the season during their midweek game in Week 6 when Lindsay Taylor and Teresa Noyola scored in a 4-2 loss to the Washington Spirit. But Seattle were unable to build on the performance despite managing 13 shots (seven on goal) in a 3-0 loss to Sky Blue FC three days later.
Portland enter the game tied for the most points in the league with Sky Blue FC, but in second place by virtue of the head-to-head tie breaker following a 1-0 loss to SBFC during the midweek in Week 6.
The loss was the first of the season for the Thorns, who recovered three days later with Alex Morgan and Christine Sinclair each scoring and Karina LeBlanc making three saves to register her third shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory over the Spirit.
Morgan’s goal was her fourth in seven games this season and tied her with four other players for the league lead.
