NEW YORK (May 4, 2023) -

The National Women’s Soccer League announced today that Angel City FC forward Alyssa Thompson has been named Rookie of the Month, presented by Ally, for the months of March and April by the NWSL Media Association and the NWSL’s on-air broadcast talent. The No. 1 overall selection in the 2023 NWSL Draft, presented by Ally, Thompson enjoyed a fast start to her professional career, finding the back of the net just 11 minutes into her NWSL debut and becoming the fourth youngest player to score in league history. Thompson joins reigning NWSL MVP and Portland Thorns FC striker Sophia Smith as the only No. 1 picks to score in their respective debuts. Following her breakout performance in Angel City’s season-opening match against NJ/NY Gotham FC, the Los Angeles, California native added another goal to her ledger in the club’s 3-3 draw against Portland Thorns FC on April 29. Appearing in 421 minutes of action through six games, Thompson’s two goals are tied for the league lead among rookies. The NWSL Rookie of the Month presented by Ally is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis, and the NWSL’s on-air broadcast talent. Votes are based on player performances from both regular season play and the 2023 UKG NWSL Challenge Cup.
