NEW YORK (June 15, 2023) –

The National Women's Soccer League Board of Governors concluded its summer strategic planning meetings yesterday in Kansas City. Hosted by Angie and Chris Long of the Kansas City Current, in addition to the strategic planning discussions, the Board toured the Current’s world class training center and headquarters, as well as the construction site of the Current’s new stadium, set to open in 2024. At the midway point in the NWSL’s 2023 season, average attendance across the league has increased 48 percent year over year. Regular season viewers on CBS have increased 21 percent, total unique viewers on Paramount+ has increased more than 50 percent, and according to Fandex’s momentum measure of the top 12 leagues in the U.S., the NWSL ranks #1 in 2023. “We are committed to building on the momentum and success of the league," said NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman. “Walking alongside our ownership and league staff, marveling at the stadium that Angie and Chris are building for the women’s game, is a reminder not only of how far we’ve come but the strength and value of the NWSL. With that top of mind, we spent two days together exclusively dedicated to discussing strategic growth and investment in our players, clubs, community, and league.” Topics discussed included recruiting, developing, and retaining the best players in the world through compensation, facilities, and staff support, 2024 schedule footprint allowing greater exposure for our players and competition with other teams and leagues around the world, developmental and academy programs, club business operations and best practices, and elevating the quality of our product through improvements including officiating. The NWSL Board of Governors will next convene in-person during the week of the NWSL Championship, scheduled for November 11, 2023. Multiple bids to host the championship have been received and are being reviewed by the league office. Details will be finalized and announced in the coming weeks.
