Group Stage (7/31-8/2) Preview: Summer Cup Pitch Notes 

Below is a selection of moments to watch for and notes to know entering the Group Stages of the NWSL x LIGA MX Femenil Summer Cup Tournament. Summer Cup Group Stage match coverage begins Wednesday, July 31 as North Carolina Courage host Monterrey at WakeMed Soccer Park. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET on Paramount+. 

NOTES TO KNOW

TUNE IN

Viewers tuning in to the Summer Cup tournament this season can catch all 33 matches on CBS Sports as the exclusive English-language distributor, with every match set to stream live on Paramount+, 11 matches simulcasting on CBS Sports Golazo Network and 12 matches simulcasting on CBS Sports Network.

For the Spanish-language broadcast in the U.S., TUDN will air three group stage matches while the remaining contests will be available for free on NWSL+, the league’s first-ever domestic direct-to-consumer streaming platform.

All 33 Spanish-language matches will be airing on ESPN on Disney+ in Mexico, Central America and the Dominican Republic, while both English and Spanish-language coverage in the remaining international territories will be available on NWSL+.

ABOUT SUMMER CUP

NWSL x LIGA MX Femenil Summer Cup will feature five groups of four teams consisting of both NWSL and LIGA MX Femenil clubs, with each club competing in three matches. Of the five group winners, the four clubs with the most points will advance to the semifinals on August 6 at CPKC Stadium.

GROUP STAGE (7/26 - 7/28) REVIEW

WINNING CHIVAS

Guadalajara became the first LIGA MX Femenil club to defeat an NWSL team this tournament as forward Gabriela Valenzuela recorded the lone goal in a 1-0 win over the Chicago Red Stars to give Chivas all three points. Goalkeeper Blanca Felix recorded five saves to secure the shutout.

ROYALS FOR THE WIN

The Utah Royals defeated the Portland Thorns 3-1 on Friday night to give the expansion team its third win of the season in all competitions and saw Royals forward Paige Monaghan become the first player in club history to record a multi-assist game. Forward Hannah Betfort opened the scoring early against her former team followed by rookie forward Ally Sentnor, who tallied her team-leading fourth goal in all competitions. Midfielder Michele Vasconcelos, also a former Thorn, secured the win in the 76th minute.

GOTHAM MOVING UP

NJ/NY Gotham FC defeated the Washington Spirit 1-0 off midfielder Yazmeen Ryan’s first career in-game penalty kick attempt and goal. During the match, forward Mak Whitman became the youngest player to appear in an NWSL match at 14 years and 1 day old.

HAT TRICK CITY

Tijuana forward Aisha Solorzano recorded the first ever Summer Cup hat trick to help the team defeat Seattle Reign FC 3-2 last Sunday, scoring in the second, 40th, and 84th minute of the match. With the win, every team in Group A has three points heading into the final round of group stage matches.

GROUP STAGE (7/31 - 8/2) PREVIEW

SUMMER CUP IN THE CASCADIA

The 41st edition of the Cascadia Rivalry is set to take place this Wednesday with the all-time series tied at 15-15-10. The last match took place during Week 12 of the regular season and saw the two sides tie 0-0.

COASTAL BATTLE

Angel City FC host neighbors to the south, San Diego Wave FC, in the second match between the two sides this season. The first match on May 23 saw the 2022 expansion clubs tie 0-0. The match marks former Angel City and current San Diego midfielder Savannah McCaskill’s return to BMO stadium after being traded to the Wave in the offseason.

WELCOME BACK SCARLETT

Bay FC host Club America for their first match between an inter-league opponent in club history. The matchup will feature a familiar face in Club America forward Scarlett Camberos, who recently transferred to the Mexico-based side.

REUNION IN HOUSTON

Forward Diana Ordóñez and the Houston Dash host Pachuca at Shell Energy Stadium for the final group stage match of the Summer Cup. Ordóñez, a member of the Mexican National Team, will square up against fellow national team players on Pachuca, including goalkeeper Estefanny Barreras and midfielder Karla Nieto, as the Dash look to steal all three points in a crucial victory.
