The National Women’s Soccer League announced today that Kansas City Current forward Alexa Spaanstra has been named Rookie of the Month, presented by Ally, for the months of September and October by the NWSL Media Association and the NWSL’s on-air broadcast talent. The No. 10 overall selection in the 2023 NWSL Draft, presented by Ally, Spaanstra recorded her first NWSL regular season assist in the 22nd minute of a 6-3 win against the Chicago Red Stars in Week 21, making a backheel pass to midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta, who scored from 10 yards out. Just twenty-two minutes later, Spaanstra weaved through the defense and sent a shot into the right side of the net for her first professional goal. Trailing by two goals against NJ/NY Gotham FC in the Current’s regular season finale, the Brighton, Michigan native cut the deficit in half in the 26th minute with her second career NWSL goal, firing a shot over the head of Gotham FC keeper Mandy Haught. Kansas City would go on to tie the match, forcing a 2-2 draw to end the regular season. Spaanstra earns the first honor of her professional career after a decorated college career at University of Virginia that saw her earn four All ACC selections and three ACC Championship All-Tournament team selections.
