Kansas City (Oct. 30, 2021)

– Following their inaugural season in the National Women’s Soccer League, Kansas City have announced a rebrand as Kansas City Current on Saturday. Fans were treated to an entertaining reveal as the new name, crest, and brand were unveiled at Legend’s Field during the club’s final regular-season match against OL Reign. Despite the fresh look, the club continues its mission to embody the spirit of Kansas City built upon three pillars: “Fierce ambition, player power and KC proud.” “We are Kansas City’s only professional sports team on a mission to elevate women, athletes, our sport and our city,” read the club’s mission statement. “We play relentless, attacking soccer with the best in the world for the power of today, for the promise of tomorrow [and] for the advancement of all.” The new crest features the same color scheme (heartland red, teal, and storm blue) but in a crisp, fresh design deviating from a circle to a “traditional” shape. Three stripes – representing athletes, fans, and community – flow across diagonally paying homage to the Kansas and Missouri Rivers. Two stars honoring the two states remain and a bolded “KC” stacked in the center symbolizes how the club will “stand on the shoulders of the women who came before, raise each other up and carve new paths for the women who will follow.” Additionally, the rebrand announcement comes a few days after the club finalized plans for an estimated $70-million project to construct the first purpose-built soccer stadium for an NWSL team. Welcome, KC Current!
