Community Partner: WeCode KC
Appreciation Night Match: September 28
KC Current is proud AD is our nominee and representative of the inaugural Lauren Holiday Impact Award as we believe she embodies a genuine commitment to giving back to community and leveraging her platform to make a change. That is evident in how and why the team decided to support Ralph Yarl, a 16-year-old African American boy who was shot twice through a front door when attempting to pick up his siblings from the wrong home after he mistook the address for the friend’s home. The shooting took place ten minutes from KC Current’s training facility and impacted the entire community. AD was extremely vocal in how we intentionally showed Ralph our support and follow-up with the family. The team decided to wear black armbands with Ralph’s last name on them. Ralph will also be joining us at a home match this season where the players will have the chance to meet him and his family.
As someone herself who has been impacted by food insecurity and someone whose moved often from apartment to apartment, AD understands the privilege that has been bestowed upon her as a professional athlete and power of her platform to give back and amplify efforts such as The Giving Grove and Habitat for Humanity. The principle we guide ourselves on within our department starts with simply showing up. AD shows up in the Kansas City community, with or without cameras, with her daughter and wife alongside her, sleeves rolled asking how she can help.
