- San Diego Wave FC defeated the Orlando Pride, 2-1, on Friday night to kick off an action-packed weekend around the NWSL that features a full six games. Wave defender Abby Dahlkemper opened the scoring in the 7th minute before Orlando forward Adriana pulled the hosts level in the 44th minute. However, a 76th-minute goal from substitute Kyra Carusa, who joined the club last week, was enough to sneak past Orlando and give San Diego a big result. The Wave sit in 2nd place with 27 points from 17 games played while Orlando are in 7th place with 22 points from 17 games played. The Wave were off to a flying start when defender Abby Dahlkemper scored an unbelievable goal after just 7 minutes to send the visitors in front. After a corner kick was sswung into the back post, the ball pinballed around the box before falling to Dahlkemper just north of the penalty spot. Taking a touch to settle with her chest, Dahlkemper then swung on the half-volley and sent the ball soaring into the roof of the goal as she shocked the home crowd early on. Orlando would try to begin their comeback starting with a chance for attacker Marta in the 20th minute. The Brazilian was on the ball surging forward and facing a 1-on-3 situation against the San Diego defense. Still making her way forward as she weaved in and out, she produced a relatively tame effort on goal in the end that Wave goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan was able to hang onto. However, in the 44th minute, Orlando were finally able to break through as fellow Brazilian Adriana put home a cross from Marta to score their lone goal of the night. Marta was on the right flank near the endline when she cut up and left a defender behind before swinging in a high ball toward the back post for Adriana. The forward then lept and softly nodded the chance into the back of the net from close in and just before the break, the Pride were level again. An action-loaded second half saw the two teams traded chances leading up to the 76th minute, but when San Diego won a corner with pressure building, the next chance would be enough to break the Orlando defense. A corner lifted in from the left side picked out Carusa in the middle of the box, and she was able to guide a headed effort to the right side of goal and past Orlando goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse to restore her team's lead relatively late on. Despite Orlando's best attempts to come back a second time, San Diego would hold on through the final 15-plus minutes including stoppage time and pick up a second consecutive win in league play.
