In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the National Women’s Soccer League today announced it has joined the Demand IX campaign to advocate for stronger Title IX protections and enforcement, in collaboration with the National Women’s Law Center, the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative and the Women’s Sports Foundation. All 12 NWSL clubs have also joined the effort. The purpose of the campaign is to coordinate efforts to galvanize the impact of individual Title IX Anniversary projects into a one aspirational movement that amplifies Title IX efforts and provides opportunities for public participation. “For 50 years, Title IX has provided a pathway towards gender equity, not only in athletics, but in all facets of our society, and that’s something to celebrate,” said NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman. “The decades-long effort to implement, maintain and strengthen Title IX has given way to the many incredible opportunities female athletes now have to compete at a high level, but there is still more work to be done. I’m excited to see what we can collectively achieve over the next 50 years as we continue working towards an even brighter future.” "Title IX is one of the most important pieces of legislation of the twentieth century," said sports icon and social justice pioneer Billie Jean King. "It is a law that speaks to the importance of gender equity in this country and stands as a benchmark of global significance. Demand IX is working to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX and to support efforts to protect and enforce this groundbreaking law, and we’re excited to have the NWSL and its clubs join us as we take on this work." Additionally, the NWSL will collaborate with its family of partners on a variety of activations to celebrate the 50th anniversary and inspire the next generation of Title IX greats at the 2022 NWSL Championship presented by Budweiser. Details regarding the league’s full slate of Title IX celebrations are forthcoming. CBS sideline analyst Marisa Pilla is also set to host a series of Title IX features, exclusively produced and distributed by the NWSL, highlighting the efforts of NWSL teams to create a fair and equitable space for athletes everywhere.
