Nérilia Mondésir Makes History as First Haitian-Born Player to Score in NWSL

Nérilia Mondésir made history on Friday night, becoming the first Haitian-born player to score in the NWSL.

Olivia Athens opened the scoring for Seattle in the 22nd minute, netting a powerful shot from the top of the box after a cleared corner kick. However, Houston quickly responded as Barbara Olivieri converted a penalty just three minutes later, leveling the game.

In the 65th minute, Mondésir—making her first start since joining the Reign in August—pounced on a loose ball in the box and slotted it through the legs of Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell. Her game-winning goal not only snapped the Reign’s losing streak but also ended their 2024 season at home on a high note.

The NWSL has proven itself to be a top destination for international stars. This season alone, 28 international players from 20 different countries have scored. Mondésir's goal stands as yet another symbol of the league’s growing international presence and the remarkable talent it attracts from around the world.
