Nicole Barnhart Announces Retirement from Professional Soccer

Nicole Barnhart, one of the most accomplished goalkeepers in women's soccer, has announced her retirement after a legendary career. Known for her consistency and resilience, Barnhart leaves the game as one of just two goalkeepers to have been rostered in all 12 NWSL seasons (the other being Alyssa Naeher).

Barnhart holds the NWSL record for most regular-season shutouts (52) and was the league’s first-ever Goalkeeper of the Year in 2013. She is also the only goalkeeper to win back-to-back NWSL Championships, leading FC Kansas City to titles in 2014 and 2015, and the first to reach 100 career regular-season appearances.

Her professional journey began in the WPS, where she played for FC Gold Pride, winning the 2010 championship, and the Philadelphia Independence. Barnhart transitioned to the NWSL in its inaugural season with FC Kansas City, where she anchored the defense through the club’s most successful years. When the franchise relocated to Utah as the Utah Royals FC in 2018, Barnhart remained a key figure before returning to Kansas City with the Kansas City Current.

Beyond her club achievements, Barnhart earned 54 caps with the USWNT, winning Olympic gold in 2008 and 2012.

Nicole Barnhart’s career stands as a testament to excellence, leadership, and longevity in women’s soccer. As she steps away from the pitch, her impact on the game will remain indelible, both as a player and an inspiration to future generations of goalkeepers.
