CHICAGO (August 4, 2022) - The National Women’s Soccer League today announced Racing Louisville FC midfielder Savannah DeMelo as July’s Rookie of the Month, presented by Ally, as voted by the NWSL Media Association.
The fourth overall pick in the 2021 NWSL Draft, DeMelo’s impact in Racing’s midfield was on full display throughout July. Appearing in every minute of play, DeMelo led her team in scoring during the month with a pair of goals. The first of the rookie’s two tallies came on July 3 when she notched the opening goal off a free kick in the team’s 2-2 tie against the Orlando Pride at Daytona International Speedway. The tally marked the second time DeMelo has scored off a free kick this season. The midfielder, who also scored the game-tying goal in Racing’s eventual 2-1 loss to NJ/NY Gotham FC on July 8, registered nine shots and a 72 percent distribution rating throughout the month. Through July 31, DeMelo leads all NWSL rookies in time on field with 1,168 minutes played, and ranks tied for second in rookie scoring with three goals. The NWSL Rookie of the Month presented by Ally is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis.
