Summer Cup Semifinals (8/6): NWSL Pitch Notes

Below is a selection of moments to watch for and notes to know entering the Semifinal doubleheader of the NWSL x LIGA MX Femenil Summer Cup tournament. Summer Cup Semifinal match coverage begins Tuesday, August 6 as NJ/NY Gotham FC takes on Angel City FC at CPKC Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. ET on CBSSN.

TUNE IN

Viewers tuning in to the Summer Cup Semifinal doubleheader this season can catch both matches on CBS Sports Network as the exclusive English-language distributor, with every match set to stream live on Paramount+.

For the Spanish-language broadcast in the U.S. the Semifinal matches will be available for free on NWSL+, the league’s first-ever domestic direct-to-consumer streaming platform.

All 33 Spanish-language matches will be airing on ESPN on Disney+ in Mexico, Central America and the Dominican Republic, while both English and Spanish-language coverage in the remaining international territories will be available on NWSL+.

ABOUT SUMMER CUP PLAYOFFS

NWSL x LIGA MX Femenil Summer Cup Semifinals at CPKC Stadium features the four clubs with the most points received during the three Group Stage matches with the two winners advancing to the Championship match at Toyota Field in San Antonio, Texas on October 25.

GROUP STAGE (7/31 - 8/2) REVIEW

WINNING LIKE ROYALTY

The Utah Royals finished at the top of Group A with a 5-1 victory over Tijuana on Wednesday in a match that featured the most goals Utah has ever scored in one game during all competitions. Forward Paige Monaghan opened the scoring in the 20th minute to bring the score level while forward Hannah Betfort put the Royals ahead in the 44th minute of action. Forward Ally Sentnor struck four minutes later just before halftime to extend the lead and rookie forward Brecken Mozingo sealed the victory with her first professional goal and brace of her career.

STAYING HOME

The Kansas City Current advanced to the semifinals at home on Tuesday after defeating Tigres 4-1 that featured newcomer Alana Cook's debut. Midfielders Lo’eau LaBonta, Debinha, Claire Hutton and defender Ellie Wheeler all joined in on the scoring and recorded goals in the win as the Current went undefeated throughout the Summer Cup tournament.

CP23 HITS THE FIELD

Angel City FC played to a draw against coastal rivals, San Diego Wave FC and earned the extra point in the penalty shootout booking a ticket to the Semifinals in Kansas City. Forward Christen Press checked into the game for the first time since June 11, 2022, scoring her penalty during the shootout to help her team earn an extra point. The striker has played 13 NWSL matches in all competitions since the end of the 2019 season, all of them in 2022.

SEMIFINAL (8/6) PREVIEW

SUMMER CUP BATTLE AT CPKC

The Kansas City Current are staying at home to host the Summer Cup semifinal doubleheader on Tuesday taking on the North Carolina Courage at 9 p.m. ET on CBSSN. The Courage have traveled to CPKC Stadium once before during the regular season that saw the home team defeat the Courage 1-0 with a goal from midfielder Debinha in the 52nd minute.

COASTAL BATTLE IN THE MIDWEST

NJ/NY Gotham FC take on Angel City FC during the Summer Cup semifinal match at 4 p.m. ET on CBSSN for the third match between the two sides in all competitions. The previous two games saw Gotham FC take all three points with a 2-1 scoreline.
