Portland Thorns FC midfielder Tobin Heath underwent minor ankle surgery on Thursday in Los Angeles and is expected to be out 8-12 weeks, U.S. Soccer announced.U.S. Soccer said in a story on their website that the surgery was a “clean-up procedure” to remove a bone growth from her right ankle and that she would have been in camp with the U.S. women’s national team this month if not for the surgery. “It’s been bothering me for a while now and we tried to rehab, but I wasn’t progressing so it was time to address it surgically,” Heath said in the story. “I want to make sure it’s not a hindrance moving forward so I can get back on the field and have great preparation for a big year ahead.” Heath missed most of the 2017 NWSL season with a back injury, but returned for Portland’s final games and the Thorns’ run to the championship. She suffered an ankle injury in the NWSL Championship and missed the USWNT’s final games of the year.
