One of the league’s original players, Sauerbrunn was among the elite group of “NWSL originals” to take the field during the 2024 season that saw so much growth in attendance and viewership. Over her 12-year career, she played in every NWSL season since the league’s inception in 2013—a feat accomplished by only eight players. She debuted with a commanding presence in the league’s inaugural match, wearing the captain’s armband for FC Kansas City and playing the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw against Portland. Her longevity and excellence set the standard and she was a true cornerstone of the NWSL.
Sauerbrunn’s list of accolades is staggering. She played every minute of three NWSL Championship victories—two with FC Kansas City (2014, 2015) and one with the Portland Thorns (2022). No player has been named to the NWSL Best XI more times than Sauerbrunn, who earned the honor in seven of her 11 regular seasons. She also won the NWSL Defender of the Year award four times, including in the league’s first three seasons (2013–2015). Her ability to anchor backlines, read the game, and execute pinpoint passes made her a force on every team she represented.
Beyond the club level, Sauerbrunn excelled on the international stage, becoming one of just eight players to win the NWSL Championship and the FIFA Women’s World Cup in the same year (2015). Her leadership, both vocal and by example, earned her the armband at FC Kansas City, Utah Royals, and Portland Thorns, solidifying her role as one of the game’s most trusted leaders.
As Sauerbrunn steps away from professional soccer, she leaves behind an indelible legacy. Her career totals of 189 games played, 16,217 minutes, and 83 wins rank among the NWSL’s all-time best, while her 87.77% passing accuracy during her Portland tenure exemplifies her technical precision in the twilight of her career. For a generation of fans and players, she represented the epitome of what it means to play the beautiful game with integrity, excellence, and heart. Thank you, Becky, the sport is better because you played it.
