Week 10 Preview: NWSL Pitch Notes

Below is a selection of moments to watch for and notes to know entering Week 10 of NWSL regular season action.

Week 10 match coverage begins Thursday, May 23 as the Angel City FC host the San Diego Wave FC at BMO Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 10 p.m. ET on CBSSN.

NOTES TO KNOW

TUNE IN

Viewers tuning in to the NWSL this season can catch more than 120 matches across CBS, ESPN, ION and Prime Video. The remaining matches will be available for free on NWSL+, the league’s first-ever domestic direct-to-consumer streaming platform.

SO-CAL SHOWDOWN

Angel City FC play host to neighbors San Diego Wave FC on Thursday for a NWSL After Dark match up on CBS Sports Network. There have been eight all-time meetings between Angel City and San Diego with each side winning three times and drawing twice.

The showdown will be the first homecoming for Wave midfielder Savannah McCaskill who was traded by Angel City down the road in the off-season.

Angel City forward Claire Emslie has scored five goals this season, just two goals behind former teammate McCaskill who holds the club record with seven goals in a season in 2022. Emslie is also tied with McCaskill at 11 total goals and three game-winning goals for the club.

BATTLE FOR THE STREAK

The Orlando Pride host the Portland Thorns on Friday which marks the first meeting in NWSL history between two teams that are on a four-plus match winning streak. The Pride currently sit atop the NWSL standings going unbeaten throughout 10 matches including seven straight wins, while the Thorns have fought its way back to the top half of the standings thanks to their six-game win streak. With a win over the Thorns, the Pride will set a new league record for the longest win streak in NWSL history.

KEEPERS KEEP SAVING

Houston Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell squares up against North Carolina Courage goalkeeper Casey Murphy. Campbell has made 54 saves this season, 25 more than any other NWSL goalkeeper in 2024. Campbell has eight regular-season games with eight or more saves in her NWSL career, more than any other goalkeeper since she joined the league in 2017. Murphy, however, recorded 26 saves and four clean sheets so far in the 2024 campaign.

AMOROS vs. MONTOYA

While Bay FC play NJ/NY Gotham FC for the first time in club history, Gotham head coach Juan Carlos Amoros is no stranger to Bay FC head coach Albertin Montoya and his coaching tactics. In 2022 while both were interim head coaches with the Houston Dash and Washington Spirit, respectively, the Dash prevailed in a 2-1 victory. Amoros led the Dash to its first ever NWSL playoffs in that year before signing with Gotham on a three-year contract.

MILESTONES

KURTZ STREAK

North Carolina defender Kaleigh Kurtz is set to break the league record for consecutive regular season minutes played this Friday against the Houston Dash. Kurtz is 41 minutes away from breaking the record at 6,483 minutes set by Amber Brooks while playing for the Houston Dash which lasted Sept 2016 to Oct 2019.

SHERIDAN FOR 500

San Diego Wave goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan is seven saves away from the milestone of 500 regular season saves. Only Chicago Red Stars goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and retired goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris have reached this milestone. Sheridan has recorded seven or more saves in a single game 16 times in her NWSL regular-season career. Her personal best is 11 saves, set in her rookie year in 2017 when she played for Sky Blue FC (now Gotham FC) against North Carolina.
