WEEK 12 REVIEW

SPIRITED FANS

The Washington Spirit set a new club attendance record as 19,897 fans took in Saturday night’s thriller against the San Diego Wave FC. Washington is the fifth team this season to set a new club attendance record.

Wave forward Jaedyn Shaw opened the scoring with her third goal of the year off Maria Sanchez’s first assist with the club since joining San Diego via trade in Week 5. Shaw’s 13th career goal in all competitions is now the most scored by a teenager in league history. Washington rookie midfielder Croix Bethune recorded her fifth goal of the season to equalize the score in the 96th minute extending the Spirit’s unbeaten streak to five games.

STREAK RACE

The Kansas City Current and the Orlando Pride remain the last two unbeaten teams in the NWSL this season. On Friday against Chicago, the Current extended its unbeaten streak to 15 games, dating back to last season, matching the second-best streak in league history. Seattle holds the league record at 16 games set in 2014. The club’s 13-game unbeaten streak in 2024 also ties a franchise record.

The Orlando Pride extended their undefeated streak to 14 games with a draw against North Carolina on Saturday, dating back to their regular-season finale of 2023. The club set a new NWSL record with eight consecutive wins from April 12-May 24. Orlando is also the first team in NWSL history to go 11-consecutive matches without trailing at any point.

RED STARS ON THE ROAD

Chicago Red Stars forward Mallory Swanson recorded her 20th goal for the club and 30th career regular season goal in the Red Stars 2-2 draw against Kansas City on Friday. She is the fourth player in Chicago history to reach the 20-goal milestone. The match also marked the third time this season that the striker has recorded a goal and an assist in the same game, which puts her as the club leader with three assists in 2024. Defender Sam Staab notched her first goal for the Red Stars in a late game equalizer and has now scored one goal in every regular season since entering the league in 2019.

GOTHAM STREAK

Gotham FC goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger has played eight straight games without a loss, passing the club keeper record set by current Wave FC goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan in 2021. Midfielder Yazmeen Ryan recorded her first goal of the season off an assist by Crystal Dunn, marking Dunn’s first assist for Gotham and 25th career regular season assist, becoming the ninth player in NWSL history to accomplish the feat. Meanwhile, Ella Stevens continued her standout year with Gotham scoring her career-high and team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Gotham FC has extended its current unbeaten streak to eight games and is just one win/draw away from tying the club record set from Sept 4, 2021-May 1, 2022. Their four straight wins is also the longest win-streak in club history since 2014-15.

WEEK 13 PREVIEW

THIRD TIME’S THE CHARM

The San Diego Wave FC travel east to take on NJ/NY Gotham FC in the third meeting of the year between these clubs and the second of the regular season. Last time these teams played at Red Bull Arena was the 2024 Challenge Cup final, the game featuring the 2023 NWSL Shield winner and the 2023 NWSL Champion, which saw San Diego take home the trophy off a late goal in the 88th minute from forward Alex Morgan.

Gotham FC goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger has played eight straight games in goal without a loss, setting a new individual club record for consecutive GK starts without a loss. The keeper is also sitting with four single-season shutouts. Only two Gotham FC goalkeepers have more for the club, Brittany Cameron with eight in 2013 and Kailen Sheridan with six in 2021.

ROYALS HIT THE ROAD

The Utah Royals are set to take on the Orlando Pride in their second match against the undefeated Pride. The first match between the two clubs on April 12 saw Orlando take all three points in a 1-0 victory that kick started the club’s eight game win streak, the longest in NWSL history. The Royals are coming off their second victory this season after defeating Bay FC on the road 1-0, while the Orlando Pride look to extend their 14-game unbeaten streak, dating back to last season.

CALIFORNIA NEIGHBORS

Bay FC hosts neighbors to the south, Angel City FC, for the second showdown between the two California expansion teams this season. During Week 1, Bay FC took all three points on the road in the club's inaugural game at BMO Stadium with a 1-0 victory off a goal by forward Asisat Oshoala. Both clubs will look to add another tally to the win column and jump up in the standings on the Road to the Shield, presented by Carmax.

REMATCH IN PORTLAND

The Portland Thorns host the Kansas City Current after losing 4-5 at CPKC Stadium during Week 1 of action. In that regular season opener, both Sophia Smith and Janine Beckie recorded braces while the Current had five different goal scorers in the club’s sold out inaugural match at CPKC Stadium. The Thorns have gone undefeated in the last eight out of nine games while the Current are chasing their 16th unbeaten game, which will match the longest undefeated streak in NWSL history set by Seattle in 2014.
