WEEK 13 REVIEW

SYD AND THE KIDS

Angel City FC’s 3-2 victory over Racing Louisville FC on Wednesday marked the first time that three teenagers have started a regular season match together with forward Alyssa Thompson, defender Gisele Thompson, and midfielder Kennedy Fuller all taking the field. Fuller became the 17th rookie this season and third-youngest player to score a regular season goal behind Kansas City Current forward Alex Pfeiffer and Portland Thorns midfielder Olivia Moultrie. Midfielder Rocky Rodriguez also found the back of the net to put Angel City up, 2-0, before Racing brought the score level off a penalty kick goal from midfielder Carson Pickett.

Veteran forward Sydney Leroux recorded her 45th career regular season goal and 15th game-winner in the 85th minute tying for ninth with fellow Angel City forward Christen Press for game-winning goals and Kansas City Current midfielder Debinha for most career goals in league history. Alyssa Thompson, awarded with the game-winning assist, tied Claire Emslie for both the club record with her seventh career assist and for single season assists with her fifth of 2024.

COURAGE HOME STREAK

The North Carolina Courage extended their regular season home unbeaten streak to 16 games, seven this year, after defeating the Chicago Red Stars 3-1. The Courage haven’t fallen at WakeMed Soccer Park since April 15, 2023, the third longest streak in league history.

Red Stars striker Mallory Swanson opened the scoring in the 12th minute, the second time this season she has scored in back-to-back games. Shortly after, Courage forward Tyler Lussi levelled the score while attacker Ashley Sanchez extended the lead and midfielder Meredith Speck sealed the win in the 81st minute.

NIGHT OF PRIDE

The Orlando Pride celebrated Pride Night at Inter&Co Stadium on Friday with a club record of six goals in a single match, the highest margin of victory in club history also tying the all-time regular season league record. Forward Barbra Banda recorded two goals and two assists making her the first player for the Pride to achieve the feat since fellow forward Marta on July 17, 2017, while her fourth brace this season tied the single-season league record.

Marta recorded a brace of her own, her 35th career goal while midfielder Summer Yates and forward Ally Watt each put the ball in the back of the net in front of 9,656 fans, the largest Orlando Pride crowd this season.

The Pride are sitting with 32 points, the second most in club history since they had 40 points in their only playoff appearance in 2017. The club’s undefeated streak has been extended to 15 games dating back to October 15, 2023.

KANSAS ON THE ROAD

The Kansas City Current extended the club’s unbeaten streak to 16 games dating back to October 7, 2023, officially tying the record set by the Seattle Reign in 2014. Midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta is now the Current’s all-time leading scorer with 15 career goals while defender Stine Ballisager is the 17th Current player to score a goal, leaving five field people that have played minutes for the Current without. LaBonta recorded her first career brace after firing a rocket from the top of the box while defender Elizabeth Ball recorded two assists in the club’s win.

Thorns forward Sophia Smith pulled a goal back, joining former NWSL star Sam Kerr as the only player with double-digit goals in three straight seasons. Smith also became the second player this season to reach 10 goals joining Orlando Pride forward Barbra Banda.

WEEK 14 PREVIEW

FOR THE RECORD

The Kansas City Current host the Houston Dash to open Week 14 of action this Friday on Prime Video. After the club’s 4-1 victory over the Portland Thorns on June 23, the Current tied the league unbeaten streak set by the Seattle Reign in 2014. With a win or draw the Current will break the league record going 17 straight games without a loss. Houston Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell is tied for the league lead with six shutouts this season as she looks to tally another clean sheet and stop the Current from finding the back of the net.

The two clubs played to a 1-1 draw in Houston on May 5. Forward Temwa Chawinga put the Current on the board from midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo's assist in the 24th minute, but Dash forward Amanda West’s first NWSL goal in the 71st minute earned the Dash a share of the points. Also in the match, goalkeeper Jane Campbell tied the regular season, single-game league record with 12 saves.

WAVE BACK HOME

The San Diego Wave are set to host the Chicago Red Stars after a three-game road trip. Most recently, the Wave played to a scoreless draw with the Houston Dash on Saturday holding the club to one shot on goal while forward Kyra Carusa led the Wave offensively with three shots, one on goal.

Chicago Red Stars forward Mallory Swanson has scored in the previous two games as she looks to extend her scoring streak against goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan who has recorded five shutouts in the 2024 campaign.

CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH

NJ/NY Gotham FC welcome the Seattle Reign to Red Bull Arena for a rematch of the 2023 Championship that saw Gotham take the trophy in a 2-1 victory. Midfielders Emily Sonnett and Rose Lavelle take on their former club for the first time this season as they look to add another tally in the win column. Reign Head Coach Laura Harvey continues to chase her 100th career win in an effort to become the first NWSL coach to reach the historic milestone.

OFF TO THE RACES

Bay FC hit the road to take on Racing Louisville FC at Lynn Family Stadium in the first match up between the two clubs. Bay FC is coming off their third win of the season after defeating Angel City FC 1-0 for the second time this campaign while Racing recently earned a last-minute draw against the Seattle Reign after forward Reilyn Turner scored in the 97th minute, her second goal in the 95th minute or later this season.
