Below is a roundup of notes from Week 16 of NWSL regular season action
NOTES TO KNOW
PRIDE WITH THE RECORDS
The Orlando Pride secured a 1-0 victory on the road over the Houston Dash, setting a new league record with 18 unbeaten games dating back to October 15, 2023. The win marked the first time the Pride has defeated the Dash in Houston since 2017 and set a new club record for 12 wins in a single season. Midfielder Summer Yates notched her fifth goal of the season and the lone goal of the night off an assist from midfielder Angelina. With the shutout, goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse set a new club record, recording 15 all-time regular-season shutouts and breaking the tie with former Pride goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris to set a new club record of clean sheets in a single season with eight.
SPIRIT CLIMB UP
The Washington Spirit jumped into second place in the standings after defeating powerhouse club Kansas City Current 4-1 at Audi Field. Midfielder Paige Metayer notched her fourth career goal with an assist from rookie midfielder Croix Bethune, who tied the single-season league assist record with her 10th tally. Forward Trinity Rodman, fresh off her stellar Olympic run that saw her win a gold medal, recorded her 21st career goal. Metayer recorded the assist on the goal, becoming the fifth Spirit player to score a goal and record an assist in the same game this season. The newest Spirit midfielder, Leicy Santos, scored her first NWSL goal in her debut to put the Spirit at 36 goals on the season, tying the single-season club record set 10 years ago in 2014.
Temwa Chawinga pulled a goal back for the Current with her 14th tally of the season, extending her Golden Boot lead and tying the league record with a goal in her sixth- straight game.
CALIFORNIA BATTLE HEATS UP
The California rivalry was in full swing over the weekend as San Diego Wave FC interim head coach Landon Donovan made his league coaching debut. However, Angel City FC reigned victorious at Snapdragon Stadium with forward Alyssa Thompson recording her first career brace in all competitions. Midfielder Meggie Doughtery Howard was awarded the assist on Thompson’s second goal, her first assist this regular season and first in two years of regular season play. Wave defender Abby Dahlkemper, who was recently traded up the coast to Bay FC, notched her first regular season goal since August 26, 2023, to pull cut the deficit in half, but Angel City ultimately prevailed.
REIGNING WINS
The Seattle Reign honored former star forward Megan Rapinoe by retiring her jersey before securing a nail-biting 1-0 victory over the North Carolina Courage with 16,598 fans in the stands, the second-highest standalone attendance in club history. The victory marked head coach Laura Harvey’s 100th win, making her the first coach in NWSL history to achieve the feat.
