Week 5 Preview: NWSL Pitch Notes

Below is a selection of moments to watch for and notes to know entering Week 5 of NWSL regular season action.

Week 5 match coverage begins Friday, April 19 as the Orlando Pride host San Diego Wave FC at Inter&Co Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. ET on Prime Video.

NOTES TO KNOW

TUNE IN

Viewers tuning in to the NWSL this season can catch more than 120 matches across CBS, ESPN, ION and Prime Video. The remaining matches will be available for free on NWSL+, the league’s first-ever domestic direct-to-consumer streaming platform.

BATTLE OF THE INTERNATIONAL GOAL SCORERS

Bay FC forwards Racheal Kundananji and Asisat Oshoala go head-to-head with Kansas City Current strikers Temwa Chawinga and Bia Zaneratto. Chawinga and Bia are two forces to be reckoned with as their chemistry on the field shines game after game. Likewise, Kundananji and Oshoala have a knack for finding the back of the net and creating scoring opportunities for their teammates.

REMAINING UNBEATEN

The Kansas City Current (3-0-1), the Orlando Pride (1-0-3) and Racing Louisville FC (0-0-4) are the last three teams left in the NWSL who will look to continue their unbeaten streak and notch a tally in the win column. The Current face a difficult defense in Bay FC and the Pride square off against a veteran San Diego Wave back line, while Racing Louisville looks to win its first game of the season after starting their campaign with four back-to-back draws.

FAMILIAR FACES

The Orlando Pride, who open this weekend’s play against the San Diego Wave, will provide a homecoming for two Wave players, including forward Alex Morgan, who spent six seasons with the Pride, appearing in 69 games and recording 23 goals and 10 assists. The Pride are the only team that Alex Morgan has faced but never scored against in her NWSL career. Wave midfielder Emily Van Egmond also spent time with the Pride across multiple seasons.

SPIRIT’S SPRINT TO THE TOP

The Washington Spirit currently hold a three-match win streak that equals their longest win streak since a seven-match run that ended with the 2021 NWSL Championship crown. The Spirit take on 2023 NWSL Champion Gotham FC as both teams look to gain three points.
