WEEK 6 REVIEW

KANSAS CITY STAYS ATOP

The undefeated Kansas City Current remain atop the leaderboard and are the third team in NWSL history to collect 16 points from their first six games of the season. The previous two teams to achieve the feat, Seattle Reign FC and the North Carolina Courage, won the NWSL shield in their respective seasons.

Forward Bia Zaneratto became the first player in Current history to contribute to at least one goal in four straight appearances. With three assists this season, she joins teammate midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo, who has four assists, in leading the league in the category so far in the 2024 campaign.

Midfielder Claire Lavogez recorded her first NWSL brace and first goal since September 2022.

LUSSI ON A ROLL

North Carolina Courage forward Tyler Lussi has scored in three straight matches for the Courage, the eighth player in club history to record such a streak in regular-season play. The only Courage player with a longer goalscoring run within a single regular season is current Houston Dash forward Diana Ordóñez, who scored in six straight games from August-September 2022 when she played for the Courage.

SMITH SCORES TWO

Portland Thorns forward Sophia Smith scored the only two goals in the Thorns’ win over the Chicago Red Stars making this her seventh career regular season brace. Smith now has four first-half braces in her career which put her tied with Sam Kerr, Sydney Leroux and Lynn Williams for the most first-half braces by any player in the NWSL.

WEEK 7 PREVIEW

BAY SCORES

Bay FC has scored at least one goal in all six games in the club’s history. This Wednesday, the club looks to continue its scoring streak against the Portland Thorns in the first-ever meeting of the two sides. Forward Asisat Oshoala became the first Bay FC player to attempt more than five shots in a match with a six-shot effort against the Wave on Saturday and has attempted at least four shots in three of her six matches. As a team, Bay FC has registered 15 shots or more in the past four straight matches.

Bay FC’s midweek match-up hosts defender Emily Menges’ previous team in the Portland Thorns. Menges spent 10 seasons with the Thorns, winning two NWSL Championships, two NWSL Shields, and a Challenge Cup title during her time.

STAYING UNBEATEN

The Orlando Pride are currently 3-0-3 in the 2024 campaign and have won the previous three games making this the club’s longest 3-match win streak since May 2021. Forward Barbra Banda tallied a goal and an assist in her first career NWSL start on Friday, becoming the seventh player in league history to do so. Banda also won a penalty in the match, becoming the first player to complete all three feats in an NWSL match since her teammate Marta, last October.

REMATCH AND REUNION

This week’s slate of midweek matches features the Chicago Red Stars hosting the Washington Spirit in a rematch of the 2021 NWSL Championship. The Spirit took home the trophy in a 2-1 victory.

The match will also serve as a reunion for defender Sam Staab as the three-time ironwoman and 2023 NWSL Defender of the Year finalist welcomes back her former club. The match also marks the return of Spirit defender Casey Krueger who played for the Red Stars from 2016 to 2023. Krueger recorded seven goals and six assists in her Chicago career, helping the club reach the Championship match in 2019 and 2021. This will be the first time the two players face their former clubs.

SWITCHING SIDES

In a BBQ Derby, Houston Dash and Kansas City Current go head-to-head and look to take all three points on Sunday, May 5. During the offseason, Houston acquired forward Cece Kizer from the Current in exchange for Nichelle Price.
